The Freedom Programme – Two hours a week that could change your life – Starting in May 2016

The Freedom Programme is FREE and open to any women who wishes, to know more about domestic abuse. It is a 12 week course for two hours a week currently running in Swadlincote and starting shortly in other locations around South Derbyshire. Each group has two facilitators who are fully trained and have a deep understanding of the issues surrounding domestic abuse. The Freedom Programme is free and confidential.

The aim is to help women to understand the beliefs held by abusive men and the effects upon children, whilst helping them gain the confidence to improve the quality of their lives and identify the local resources that can help. It is not about telling women what to do but about empowering them to make their own choices. Those who have experienced abuse often have little of no understanding of what has happened to them and it feels like a painful and confusing mess for which they are largely to blame. The Freedom Programme aims to start turning this around at the women’s won pace.

The philosophy of the programme is based on research and outlines the role played in such offending by the pursuit of power and control.

The feedback that we have had from out service users is very positive. Here is some of what people have said:

“Without the programme I would have gone back to him I was scared of being a single mum but realised that I can do it by myself”

“It made me realise that I am not the only one that these things happen to”

“I made friends while on the course and felt for the first time in my life that I was really understood”
